The Speed of Time
On April 20, 2024, I will celebrate two years at Benjamin F. Edwards. Wow did that go fast! No, it really didn’t. If you Google “Speed of Time” you find lots of geek talk:
- “Time is relative and has no speed”
- “Time Dilation.”
- “Time and space don’t have flows or speeds.”
But you know what I’m talking about. I’ve started adding “dead hangs” into my fitness routine. Apparently it’s great for your shoulders, it decompresses your spine and improves grip strength, a significant predictor of mortality. I’m up to 75 seconds. Now… convince me that 75 seconds of dead hanging is the same “speed of time” as 75 seconds of eating an ice cream cone. No way! Of course, it is the same “speed of time”, but it’s our perception of the speed of time that changes. When we are doing what we enjoy, our perceived “speed of time” accelerates. When we are surrounded by people who are supportive, kind, nurturing and sharpening, our perceived “speed of time” accelerates.
And that has made all the difference here at Benjamin F. Edwards. The people here have accelerated my perception of the “speed of time.” They are honest. They care about each other. One of the primary corporate objectives is to treat
others the way you would want to be treated, i.e. “Love your neighbor as yourself.” And it’s not just a platitude. People really live it out here.
It leaves me grateful and even more focused on being that person for the others around me. With clients and in the branch office and the home office. We are all pulling together. So, if you join Benjamin F. Edwards, as a client or as an advisor, you better hang on! Because time moves pretty quickly here!
